How To Keep Your Child’s Natural Hair Healthy During Warm Weather
Summer is around the corner! And you know what that means. The heatwaves and sunshine will be coming through in no time. This means it’s time for haircuts & damage control advice approved by our lovely stylists. The weather can prove for a mighty foe when it comes to hair, so here’s a refresher course on caring for your child’s natural hair when the sun is beating down.
Wash it Weekly
Make sure not to wash your child’s hair daily. Assign it a wash day every week. During hot months, shampooing needs to be done as little as possible, and when it is, use one that is moisturizing and nourishing for your child’s hair to fight frizz and damage.
Hydrate!
Hydrating your natural hair is so very important to keep it healthy. Using conditioners, oils, and creams in the right way is vital for hair care protocol. Getting your hair wet and sealing in the moisture with oils, and then applying your conditioners or creams is one of the best ways to keep as much moisture in as possible.
Avoid Chlorine & Saltwater
It’s inevitable that some of us are going to be going swimming during hot weather. But before you send your kids out to take a dip, wait. Natural hair is absorbent. You want to make sure that it will be absorbing as little of that water as possible. First make sure your hair is already good and wet before you take the dive in, and add conditioner. This will keep your hair safer from potentially damaging additives in the water. A swim cap, while not totally necessary, is one of the best choices you can make.
Avoid Dehydrating Products
Products that contain alcohol and synthetic oils can spell trouble for natural hair. Avoid them where you can- unnecessary moisture loss is far from a bonus for your child. Make sure you read the product label, especially when going to use hairspray, shampoo, and styling gels.
Love Those Ends
The ends of the hair are the most vulnerable to neglect and damage, so make sure to pay them special attention. Be gentle with them during the detangling process, and comb hydrating oils and conditioners through them when you can. This will leave them protected and keep them from suffering from any accidental neglect.
